E.L. Cox

E.L. Cox began his insurance career in 1952, at the Michigan Mutual Insurance Company. Under his leadership, the companies adopted a national scope and the Amerisure name. He served in several capacities including Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer prior to his retirement in 1991.  Over the course of more than 45 years, Mr. Cox has served our industry as a successful insurance executive, industry advocate, regulator and statesman.

Mr. Cox retired from the Amerisure Companies to take an assignment, at the request of Governor John Engler, to serve as President and CEO of the Accident Fund, Michigan's workers' compensation insurance company.  In that capacity, Mr. Cox oversaw the successful privatization of the Accident Fund in 1995, the largest privatization of its kind in the United States.  After the completion of the privatization in 1996, Mr. Cox's release from public service was to be short lived.  In April 1998, Governor Engler again called upon Mr. Cox's service and expertise, this time asking him to be the Commissioner of Insurance.  Governor Engler noted that "there are certain individuals who set the standard for what it means to be truly successful.  E.L. Cox is such a person.  His record of career and community service achievements is remarkable and I consider him one of the most accomplished members of the insurance industry in the nation."

During his insurance career, Mr. Cox also served our industry and state as a director and past chairman of the Alliance of American Insurers, director of the Economic Club of Detroit, director of the Michigan Manufacturers Association, past chairman of the Michigan Chamber of Commerce, member of the Greater Detroit Chamber of Commerce, trustee of the Safety Council of Southeastern Michigan and chairman of the Traffic Safety Association of Michigan.  He served the community as a director of the American Red Cross, director of the Boys and Girls Club of Southeastern Michigan, trustee of the Citizens Research Council of Michigan, trustee of the Detroit Historical Society, director of Holy Trinity, trustee of the Michigan Colleges Foundation, trustee and treasurer of Olivet College, director of the United Way, and director of the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit.

E.L. Cox is known as a man you can rely on and his word is his bond.  E.L. has distinguished himself by his humanity and integrity.
